The Mission of SBS
Our mission is to develop wholesome, uplifting, impactful and moral avenues for artistic expression in the Caribbean and beyond. Our aim is to impact our nation, the region and the world through the message of our product.
Marcia is the Artistic Director at Praise Academy of the Performing Arts (PAPA) Barbados and it is in this capacity that she gains the opportunity to interact with youth from all walks of life.
To date, SBS has produced six (6) feature length films, comprising the HUSH series – Hush 1, Hush 2 and Hush 3, Chrissy, Vigilante – The Crossing and Barrow – Freedom Fighter. This latest film produced in 2016-17, won the 2018 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Rwanda for “Best Diaspora Documentary”. These films were produced in a relatively short period, between 2008 and 2017. As we write, our newest film JOSEPH – The Return, will be completed in 2019. On all films, Marcia is the writer and director, while her husband Dave is the Executive Producer. The company believes that there are great possibilities for film in the Caribbean and that we have many stories yet to be told to the world.
Our offices are recently moved to Upper Collymore Rock, St Michael, Barbados.
Marcia is a native of Jamaica and is married to Barbadian Dave Weekes. Together, they studied and lived in New York before migrating back to Barbados.
Marcia has been the Artistic Director of Praise Academy of Dance – Barbados for the last 17 years. She has been instrumental in progressing the school from a uni-focused dance school into a school of the arts where many forms of dance are taught in addition to acting for film and theatre. She recently founded the Caribbean School of the Arts, where a balanced education in the Arts is the focus.
With no formal training in film, Marcia has written, directed and produced seven (7) successful feature-length films including the Hush Series, Chrissy, Vigilante – The Crossing, Barrow – Freedom Fighter (which won an AMMA) and the late-2019 released drama, JOSEPH. Marcia is a true inspiration and is herself inspired and driven by God and her love and devotion to the youth.
Dave Weekes is a Barbadian and the husband of Marcia Weekes, writer, director and film producer.
Dave holds a BSc from The University of the West Indies – Cave Hill campus and an MBA from St. John’s University in New York. Him and Marcia are the parents of three wonderful boys Dan-Jamal (26), Marc-Ari (22) and Josh-Dayo (18).
As Chairman of the board of Praise Academy of Dance and a Director of Step By Step Productions, Dave has over the past 20 years overseen the development and growth of these entities in an ever evolving landscape.
Dave has worked assiduously to distribute the films of Step By Step Production to the islands of the Caribbean, the USA, Canada, the UK, France, Cuba, Brazil and the African Continent.
One of his passions is to create opportunities for young people to discover, embrace, develop and utilize their talents and strongly believes “opportunity” is one of the ways we can reduce some of the negative ills of our society.
